notes from the energetic quietus

// performative lecture + sound installation with Tegan Moore // performance at TUNING SPECULATION 7: NON, November 15-17, 2019, Array Space, Toronto // exhibited as part of Speculative Energy Futures: Prototypes for Possible Worlds at FAB Gallery, December 10, 2019 - January 11, 2020, Edmonton, Alberta //

Attuned to thresholds of (in)audibility, this performative lecture turned listening station directed our active, if habituated, (non)ears towards the (seemingly) non-productive, the imperceptible and the exhausted dimensions of the energy impasse. Situated amidst the promissory echoes and affirmative mantras that territorialize much discourse around energy futures today, this project attuned to the energy impasse as a potential expression of negation, as a situation wherein further development is, indeed, impossible, perhaps even impassable. In our own energetic experimentations, however, this impo/assibility was not treated as cause for further petromelancholic lament, nor was it the fuel for imagining brighter energy imaginaries, but rather repositioned as a fulcrum for experimenting with forces of subtraction, negation, and, ultimately, the non.
